What is an Eye Emergency?

Some of the most common medical conditions that we evaluate and treat are infections, allergic reactions, styes (hordeolum), abrasion or cuts, and removal of foreign bodies in the eye. If you are experiencing any irregular symptoms that involve your eyes, you should contact us about emergency care. Some concerning symptoms include:

  • Eye pain
  • Severe Redness
  • Discomfort, grittiness, irritation
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Mucous discharge
  • Sudden loss of part or all of your vision (even temporarily)
  • Onset or change of flashing lights or floaters
  • Foreign body
  • Chemicals in contact with your eyes
  • Excessive tearing
  • Injury to the eye
  • Blunt injury to eye or head

Our office can often make same-day appointments in the case of ocular emergencies to best serve our patients.

Should I seek emergency care?

In certain cases, your injury, infection, or complication could lead to vision loss if not immediately addressed. When you come in close to the time of the injury or emergence of symptoms, the doctors can provide prompt evaluation, testing, and referral to outside care if necessary.

If you experience an emergency and can’t reach the office, call the nearest emergency room or urgent care center.
