State-of-the-Art Optomap®
The Optos takes wide-field retinal images to aid your doctor in evaluating the health of your eyes and monitoring ocular diseases.
Retinal diseases, like many health conditions, don’t cause symptoms in their early stages, and routine eye exams are the only way to diagnose and treat them before your vision is affected. The team at West Broward Eyecare Associates in Tamarac, Florida, uses the state-of-the-art Optomap® ultrawide-view retinal imaging scan to create clear, detailed images of your retinas. If you’re due for an eye exam or have a high risk of retinal disease, call West Broward Eyecare Associates or schedule an appointment online today.
What is an Optomap?
Optomap is an ultrawide-view retinal imaging scan. The equipment can take pictures that show around 80% of the back of your eye, compared with approximately 15% with other retinal imaging devices.
The team at West Broward Eyecare Associates uses this innovative technology to create images of your retina that show signs of eye disease. They store your pictures and can compare your current scans with the images from previous exams to identify changes in your retina and eye health.
In addition to diagnosing eye disease, Optomap also allows the team at West Broward Eyecare Associates to see whether treatments for eye disease are working.
Optomap Q&As
WHAT EYE DISEASES CAN OPTOMAP HELP TO DIAGNOSE?
Your retina is vulnerable to a wide range of diseases and injuries. Some of the common retinal diseases include:
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Retinal tears
- Retinal detachment
- Macular degeneration
- Macular puckers or holes
Your risk of retinal disease is higher if you have severe myopia (nearsightedness) or a history of eye trauma. Health conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes also increase your risk of retina problems. If you smoke or if you’re overweight or obese, you also have a higher chance of developing retina disease.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN OPTOMAP SCAN?
The Optomap scanning process is quick and comfortable. Nothing touches your eye, and there are no sudden sounds or clicks that could make you blink or flinch. In most cases, your eye doctor doesn’t even need to use dilating drops.
You simply look into the device with one eye — like peering through a keyhole — and with a small flash of light, Optomap takes a picture of your retina. Then you repeat the process on the other eye. Each scan takes less than half a second, and your eye doctor can examine the images immediately.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED AN OPTOMAP SCAN?
The team recommends having an Optomap scan at every eye exam. Optomap allows them to monitor your retinas and overall eye health in great detail, diagnosing and treating conditions before your vision is damaged.
